Dear Rehtaeh,

Words simply aren’t hefty enough to reflect the weight put onto my heart when hearing about your story. I only wish someone in your life could have let you know how precious your life is. You are worth more than diamonds. You were never a problem. It was never your fault. There was nothing wrong with you.

It sickens me that an innocence was taken from you. It sickens me that they photographed it and displayed you as a symbol of what not to be. What’s more horrifying, when others should have gathered behind you with open arms. We let you down. Consequences await your ignorant persecutors.

Instead you displayed excellent strength by enduring the bashing, the exile, and all the pure hatred that was inflicted upon you. While you fought to heal the wounds that cut your skin, they poured out lies. I don’t even know where to begin.

Rehtaeh, you are an inspiration. I pray your story awakens this generation to stop making more and more statistics about kids being bullied. Bullied to the point of wanting to end their life. I pray your story unites young people everywhere against the animosity, and justice can be brought to those who are responsible.

Your spirit is free now, and you are no longer imprisoned in your body where you undeniably carried a lot of hurt, and I hope you are at peace. I hope you can finally fly the way you were meant to. Most of all, I hope that a brighter day can rise from the ashes of this tragic story, and we can end violence against each other once and for all.

“Keep Your Head Up” Is An Important Anti-Bullying Song And Message Of Hope For Young People

Kutroc Records of greater Boston has released a major anti-bullying song called “Keep Your Head Up.”
Artists Mateo, Kitarah, and Maverik have collaborated on this very important release that focuses on the significant problem of bullying in the cyber age and in schools across America.

The song was written and is performed to send a very strong message to young people who are suffering at the hands of bullies.
Through powerful lyrics and upbeat rhythm, the song reminds kids that they are not alone, to stand up, and that they can make a difference by speaking up and sharing their stories. Kids being bullied need to know that they are not powerless and they do have options to stop what is happening to them.

Recent statistics show that over 2.7 million students are bullied each year in the United States with over 2 million taking on the role of the bully. 1 in 3 young people have been victims of a “cyber-bullying.” Sadly, only 1 out of 10 young people who have been bullied ever report the incidents to their parents or other adults. This is the major reason that the Kutroc artists wrote and recorded the anti-bullying song. Their message is one of hope and empowerment and the song drives home the fact that if a bullied child speaks out they are
taking the first step towards a brighter day. No matter how difficult a situation is, kids need to be reminded
that they are not alone.

On “Keep Your Head Up,” each of the three artists take their turn singing and delivering the positive message that will change young people’s lives. The artists were recently invited on The Roy Green Show to discuss bullying and the latest teen suicide crisis in Canada and the U.S. The song is currently available on iTunes and retailers worldwide. She sat and blocked them out. A task she had mastered. Turning her attention to other things, the noises and sounds of the baffled talking resounding in the classroom soon would dissolve into a distant hum.

The stares did not exist either as long as she kept her eyes on the blank sheet of paper in front of her. The one the teacher would lay out for her to draw on during class while the other students learned. They envied her.

Not understanding why she got “special treatment.” And since they could not communicate with her, they left her to herself. Who is going to sit with the girl who does not speak English and dresses so differently?

Bullied At School

Why be nice to the new kid?. When she gets to sit in the back of the classroom and draw with markers and crayons and play with colors, while everyone else had to do math and reading. Of course the kids would be jealous!

She looked different, dressed different and talked different. She ate lunch by herself. Went to recess by herself, sat on the bus by herself and went home by herself. Drawing was nice. What kid would not rather draw than do school work. And when they went to the computer lab, she got to play games while the others had to type. Yet, there was something about the atmosphere that did not quite sit right in her spirit.

She was old enough to know she could not talk to anyone nor did they care to talk to her, and though she could not understand what people were saying, it did not take a genius to know the gossip wheel was turning in her direction. The creative outlet was a nice distraction, yet every morning, the tears would still stream down her face as she pleaded with her mother not to make her go to school. She even began throwing tantrums to get her way, because school was something dreadful and scary that she did not look forward to and felt imprisoned in.

The idea of school was one that was heavy, weighed down by a lot of negative feelings tied together with self-awareness. Her mom kept her home, not knowing what else to do. She too, could not speak to the teacher or understand what the principle had to say. This was my life when I first moved to Boston from Brazil at the age of 9.  Bullied at school.
